BRITISH BIGFOOT RESEARCH
Cold Hesledon
Ths is a sighting that occurred a few years ago, which was touted by the CFZ as a possible British Mothman sighting. But what led them to this conclusion is a mystery as there were no reports of wings of any kind. After studying this report, we have seen more connections with the other alleged British ‘Bigfoot’ sightings. A couple, aged in their 40’s, had just left the Pemberton Arms pub in Cold Hesledon, Durham, after watching a live band throughout the night. At around 10pm they decided to leave the Pemberton Arms to head into the main town centre to have a few drinks. They decided to walk as it was a warm evening, despite being in the middle of October.
The couple started to walk towards town, making their way to the main road that led there. It was as they passed a nearby field that their terrifying experience took place. Glancing up they noticed something in the field. It was tall, at least seven feet in height, and was dark all over. They noticed its’ glowing eyes, which were red in colour. Their first thoughts were that it was a horse but this theory was quickly dashed. This was human shaped but being seven foot tall and having glowing eyes, it wasn’t any usual man. The couple became scared. It stood staring at the couple for around a quarter of a minute. Then, all of a sudden, it let out a piercing shriek, which they described as sounding almost like a fox. It then appeared to “disappear” down into the ground, as if it had fallen down into a well. The couple by now were terrified and took off running, intent on getting as far away from this strange being as possible. They reached a nearby water treatment plant and tried to phone for a taxi cab. They were unable to get any phone signal so gave up and walked all the way home, nervously glancing over their shoulders all the way home in case the thing followed them. They kept it to themselves for three weeks before reporting it to the CFZ (Centre of Fortean Zoology) For some unknown reason the CFZ thought that the couple’s sighting was somehow related to the Mothman phenomena of Point Pleasant, in the United States. This seems very odd, seeing as the only similarities was the glowing eyes of the supposed creature. There were no wings seen in the sighting. The only other loose connection was that the sighting took place in Cold Hesledon and this was connected to the Mothman via Ingrid Cold! This seems quite a far stretch, even for us.
For us this sighting has all the hallmarks of a British Bigfoot encounter. The figure was tall (in the seven foot region), was uniformly black or dark all over, had glowing eyes, and let out a screaming vocalization. The strangest thing about this encounter (and maybe another reason why it was connected to the Mothman) was the weird way the being, in the witnesses own words, “disappeared straight down like it had fell down a well or trap door!”. Does this prove this was some kind of supernatural being, such as the Mothman? We think not. After debating over this we theorise that, if indeed this was a British hairy hominid, then the going down movement witnessed by the couple could simply be the creature dropping down into a concealed position on all fours, to escape the unwanted eyes that were upon it. Though we do not think that the British Bigfoot is the same species of the North American Sasquatch, we do think they come from a similar lineage, being an ancient, archaic human. With this in mind, the Sasquatch is known to drop onto all fours. This much is evident from eye-witness reports and video footage. So it is acceptable to us that the British hominid could also perform this action. The glowing eyes have been reported in other British sightings. The height of over seven foot rules out a human. There is enough to say this is a genuine sighting. There was no reason to suspect the witnesses were lying. This sighting is important as it has two witnesses, which rules out mis-identification. These two people both saw the same thing, and both swore to it.
So, if this is a British ‘Bigfoot’, why was it in close proximity to the local public house and in a field? The obvious answer is that it was hunting for food. Animals and bird are available in abundance, with rabbits, mice, pheasant, badger and fox among the food sources readily available. It is also interesting to note that there is a patch of undisturbed woodland nearby, a place named Hawthorn Dene Woods, which covers around 160 acres. Could this forest be where the alleged hominid had come from? We may never know but this sighting is an intriguing one and worthy of discussion.
